Growing up in south-eastern Michigan near the second largest population of Islamic people in the world; I had a great opportunity to taste some of the best middle eastern cuisine around. But, Haji Baba topped all of it! This is by far the best middle eastern food in the Valley!
Everything here is homemade and family run. Each visit made in the last five years, the owner is always the one who is taking your bill at the cash register. Hummous, falafel, schwarma, spanakopita, gyro plate, dolmas; it is all delicious and under ten dollars. Chicken schwarma plate is a must try. It is $7.99 and a when it comes to your table, you’re pretty sure it’s not yours because there’s no way you can get all that food for $7.99! The hummous is so creamy and comes with a homemade pickle and of course the kalamata olive. The chicken is so incredibly moist, perfectly seasoned, and comes with light fluffy jasmine rice, tabouli, and my favorite…garlic sauce! Now, for some people chocolate, or ice cream, or your mother’s pecan pie just makes everything alright in the world…but for me it’s garlic! It has a healing power and you’ll find lots of garlic at Haji Baba! The best part yet is thier handmade pita. It’s a secret and you won’t get the handmade unless you ask for it. This pita is so soft, so warm, yet lightly crispy on the outside. You may just want to wrap yourself up in this pita and call it a night. For a beverage make sure you get their iced tea. It is fresh brewed with a touch of mint and tastes like paradise in your mouth.
After eating your huge plate of food, and even if you don’t have room, do not leave Haji Baba without taking home a piece of their homemade, sticky bakalava. They have about eight different varieties and the walnut is a personal favorite, only $1.25. This place is truly amazing, truly delicious, truly economical, and truly a gem to the valley of the sun!
